MCAD is saddened to share the news that Professor Emeritus Phil Anderson passed away on May 2.

A highly regarded instructor, Anderson taught film, television, and video history for fifteen years at MCAD. He was also a film critic at City Pages, and appeared at Walker Art Center in 1987 in the Reports series of "informal presentations by Twin Cities artists, critics, and scholars," during which he presented critical assessment of the then-innovative field of computer-generated animation and collage. Upon his retirement from teaching, he was granted Faculty Emeritus status in 2015.

In MCAD’s NEXT Magazine (Volume 1, Issue 1), longtime faculty friend and colleague Frenchy Lunning wrote that Anderson was "well-loved and respected by students and faculty alike. Phil Anderson has long been a mainstay in the Liberal Arts Department, with his wide-ranging knowledge, subtle humor, and his position as a critic of the arts and culture in the Twin Cities area. Phil ushered so many students into an intimate appreciation and investigation of culture, especially in his knowledge of the history of animation."

Anderson had an important impact on so many inside and outside of the college. His legacy and absence will be felt by family, friends, colleagues, and former students.

Memorial services have yet to be announced. More details to follow. If you would like to share a note or photo with the family, please use this form.
