Dean Koutsky’s MCAD degree was in illustration, and he worked as an advertising agency art director. Just as importantly, however, he’s been a tireless supporter, adviser, and board member of multiple Twin Cities arts groups: the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, various theater groups, the Weisman Art Museum, and the College of Visual Arts. Most significantly, his alma mater benefited from his service as Chair of the Board of Trustees.
Minnesotans know his ad work well, because at Campbell-Mithun Advertising Koutsky led print and television campaigns for national clients including the 3M Company, General Mills, Land O’Lakes, and Dairy Queen. When he retired, he was Executive Creative Director and Vice Chairman of the agency.
“Retirement,” however, doesn’t accurately cover what he’s done since then. For some years, Koutsky taught advertising at MCAD, and currently leads the Edina Art Center’s Friday Painter’s Studio. In his own work, he uses both studio and plein-air approaches, with a passion for boats, water, and “Other People’s Parties,” an ongoing painting series.
