Arlene Birt is fascinated by the way we are endlessly tied to the world through the things that we consume. Her work deals with finding/creating background stories and making them visible to audiences. Through this act, individuals are better able to connect emotionally to the specific social and ecological-sustainability impacts of the everyday actions of people.
A Fulbright scholar, Birt splits her time between the United States and Belgium, where she collaborates with organizations from around the world to visualize topics of sustainability through information, identity, and interactive design. Her design and public art projects have been featured internationally. Additionally, she is an MCAD faculty member, teaching in the sustainable design program.
