Johnson grew up drawing and lettering but never really considered it could lead to a paying job.
After hitting a point in his mid-20s where he wasn’t happy with his professional life in the financial industry, Johnson decided to follow his lifelong interests and enrolled at MCAD to hone his skills in design and typography. From freelance to in-house to agency, art director to designer, Johnson’s kerned his experience to try a little bit of everything—and he hasn’t looked back since making the decision to enroll at MCAD.
MCAD laid a strong foundation for Johnson’s design aesthetic. The instructors and the environment, the projects and the practice, and the exposure to the creative process really opened up doors for him in the design community. Learning about hierarchy, design elements and principles, and the importance of discipline gave purpose to his passion.
Johnson currently lives in St. Louis Park, MN, and works as a designer in Chanhassen, MN, for 3e—The Life Time Agency, the internal agency of Life Time Fitness. He regularly works on national branding campaigns and also creates campaigns and individual pieces for Life Time’s many disciplines, including basketball, swim, spa, food, kids, retail, and corporate initiatives. This diversity of subjects challenges and expands his aesthetic and provides him with the opportunity to design for many different mediums, including environmental graphics, signage, apparel, print, and digital. The best part? He’s discovered an outlet for his hand-drawn type and illustrations. His unique style brings personality to the Life Time brand and is a great exercise for his creativity.
“Take advantage of all the resources at your disposal. Meet as many people as you can. Be humble. Stay hungry. Devote yourself to the discipline of craft. Give a shit about the little things.”
