Minneapolis College of Art and Design 2012/13 Annual Report

At the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, why we create is as important as what we create. Everyone at MCAD passionately believes that art and design are potent, powerful forces for solving problems and sustaining the public good. Our mission is nothing less than improving the human experience through the applied force of excellent art and design.

From creating public art at transit stations to designing health clinics that effectively communicate messages of wellness to diverse communities, from improving the lives of the homeless in our community to encouraging fair trade and improved conditions for people around the world, MCAD students and graduates are transforming the way we think about human interaction.

Letter from the President

Dear Friends and Supporters of MCAD,

For Minneapolis College of Art and Design, 2013 was a year of great challenge and promise. Using our five-year strategic plan as our guide, we continued to update and strengthen the MCAD educational experience by increasing financial aid support, expanding academic offerings, and emphasizing the role of art and design in the shaping of our world.

At MCAD we put our students first. Whether that means offering exciting new academic programs or providing state-of-the-art digital technologies or helping them to find their unique artistic voice, MCAD is committed to giving our students the best educational experience of their lives.

But offering an outstanding arts education is one thing; making it accessible to all motivated, talented students is another. That’s why MCAD has been putting tremendous effort into raising and distributing more scholarship funds. More scholarships mean more students are able to attend MCAD, persist in their studies, and graduate with less debt. I am particularly proud of our NOW Scholarship program, which provides financially struggling MCAD seniors with much-needed gap funding.

As you know, art and design have the power to effectively communicate new ideas and ways of being. They can break down barriers to progress and prosperity. We are therefore not just educating our students to be professional artists and designers; we’re preparing them to be agents of change. We offer many opportunities for students to engage in professional practice while they are here at MCAD. Through these programs, they are transforming community, using their talent and creativity to instill hope and inspire action.

One such program is the Greater Minnesota Arts Initiative (GMAI). In GMAI students work with Minnesota communities, both rural and urban, to address identified problems and discover unique opportunities. Project goals can range from sparking economic development to creating health intervention strategies for inner-city neighborhoods.

The innovative spirit that led to the creation of the GMAI is found throughout MCAD. The first art and design school to offer online courses, we continue to expand our online course catalog. This year we graduated our first Masters in Sustainable Design online class, and launched a new certificate course in Creative Technologies for Educators. Our students are building international teams to develop products that will improve the lives of people all over the globe, and they are using art and design to forge connections and foster greater understanding of others.

At MCAD, we’re not just educating highly skilled visual professionals. We’re producing the creative, cultural, and community leaders of tomorrow.

As the president of Minneapolis College of Art and Design, I thank you for your contributions to the school. Whether you provided scholarship funding, strengthened our academic programs, helped us to make improvements to the campus or supported our K-12 Summer Youth programs, your gift will resonate in the lives of our students and the future of our community.
