XMCAD

Annual Community Report

2016–2017

Letter from the President

Jay Coogan

Dear Friends and Supporters:

There is much to celebrate about the past year. The 2016–2017 fiscal year was a historic one for the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) as the college completed its first‐ever comprehensive capital campaign raising nearly $24 million. This remarkable accomplishment lays the groundwork for a vibrant and relevant college poised to meet the needs of students graduating in the twenty-first century.

Much of what we achieve at MCAD is because of you—our generous community of supporters. We are grateful for the foundations, corporations, alumni, and friends who share our belief in putting students first. This commitment fuels the next generation of creative leaders.

In keeping with our three core values of Students First, Innovative Spirit, and Transforming Community, here are just a few notable accomplishments from the past academic year.

2016–2017 Accomplishments:

• NEXT/NOW, MCAD’s first comprehensive fundraising campaign, came to a successful conclusion. Exceeding expectations, this five‐year campaign raised nearly $24 million for scholarships, facilities, and academic programs. In fact, many of our greatest accomplishments, including the many improvements to campus facilities, academic programming additions and enhancements, and the increase in scholarship awards, are the results of our wonderful community of supporters.

• MCAD revamped its twenty‐year‐old Entrepreneurial Studies (ES) Program and added new courses to create a unique undergraduate program which combines elements of design and business. E/STUDIO, a dedicated space for the program that features the latest technology, opened this fall. These program updates respond to the needs of today's students and the rapidly changing economic landscape, keeping MCAD on the cutting edge.

• Along with the enhancements to the ES program space, the animation workspace was expanded and additional equipment was added for MCAD’s fastest growing program.

• MCAD collaborated with neighbors such as Whittier Alliance, Simpson Housing, Midtown Greenway Coalition, and Little Earth of United Tribes on a variety of art projects that helped to instill a sense of pride and mutual respect within the community. These projects celebrate the multiculturalism of Minneapolis’ most diverse neighborhoods.

Plans for the Coming Year:

• Implement a new product design major with course offerings beginning in Spring 2018.

• Support students through development of the Entrepreneurial Studies Program to promote business skills that help them start and run their own businesses and be effective creative leaders.

• Explore new housing models to better meet student needs.

• Develop an expanded health and wellness program for students.

• Promote alumni‐to‐alumni networking via the recently launched online alumni directory.

• Reposition the role of the Career Development Department for greater impact.

Looking ahead, I am excited to continue improving this already stellar institution, both as a preeminent art and design school and as a community resource. The college is fortunate to have a network of dedicated supporters whose contributions are fundamental to MCAD’s success. Thank you for being a supporter of art, design, education, and creativity!

Sincerely,

jay coogan sig

Who We Are

MCAD is home to nearly 800 students and offers professional certificates, bachelor of fine arts and bachelor of science degrees, and graduate degrees. A four‐year, nonprofit, private college with the highest level of accreditation for an art and design school, MCAD is a national leader in areas such as animation, comic art, fine arts, furniture design, and graphic design.

Where Creativity Meets Purpose

Since 1886, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design has been committed to educating individuals to become professional artists and designers, effective critical thinkers, creative leaders, and engaged global citizens.

Where Learning Meets Teaching

World‐class art and design education begins with world‐class educators. MCAD’s faculty are more than just respected artists and achievers in their fields—they are devoted mentors and compassionate, dedicated teachers.

Where Imagination Meets Entrepreneurship

MCAD has long celebrated the entrepreneurial spirit of artists and designers. Whether they choose to launch and pilot their own business or work as part of a team, tailor‐made courses equip students with the language of business, giving them the versatility to move easily between a variety of career paths.

Where Passion Meets Public Good

MCAD holds the belief that art and design are potent, powerful forces for solving problems, improving the human experience, and sustaining the public good. MCAD alumni are among the most widely‐known and respected public art advocates in the country today.

NEXT/NOW Capital Campaign

Dear Friends of MCAD:

As chairman of MCAD’s first comprehensive capital campaign, I am proud of all that has been accomplished in support of students, art, design, and education. This monumental campaign was launched in 2012 and came to a successful close on May 31, 2017, exceeding expectations by raising nearly $24 million toward the mission of providing students with a world‐class education.

I have been involved with MCAD for more than thirty years, following in the footsteps of my father, Atherton Bean, who was also an MCAD Life Trustee. The support for NEXT/NOW from MCAD’s generous community of donors reminds me why I continue my involvement with this great institution year after year: talented students, dedicated faculty and staff, rigorous academic programming, state‐of‐the‐art facilities, and above all, an institution that paves the way for the next generation of art and design leaders prepared to change the world through creativity and purpose.

As always, thank you for your generous support of MCAD students.

Regards,
Bruce W. Bean
Chairman, Board of Trustees
Life Trustee

NEXT/NOW Priorities

The NEXT/NOW Campaign was a comprehensive effort, comprised of all funds given to the campaign and to MCAD’s annual fund. Beyond strengthening the college’s annual fund, the three campaign priorities were:

Scholarships

Given the college’s commitment to placing students first, scholarship aid has been, and will continue to be, a top priority. Scholarship gifts are critical to making an MCAD education within reach for deserving students. Nearly four in ten MCAD students come from low‐income families. More than $8 million has been raised for endowed scholarships through NEXT/NOW.

Since the start of the campaign, the amount of donor‐funded scholarships awarded each year has more than doubled.

Facilities

MCAD’s facilities are second to none. Important facility upgrades, such as the new media wing of the college (M/LAB), ensure that MCAD continues to have some of the best media production capabilities in the Midwest. E/STUDIO, a dedicated space for entrepreneurial studies, opened in fall of 2017.

Programs

The NEXT/NOW campaign supports academic programs that empower students to deal with complexity, diversity, and change in today's creative economy. The revamped Entrepreneurial Studies Program, for example, helps students who want to develop management, leadership, and team-building skills.

NEXT/NOW Donors

Thank you to the many donors who supported the NEXT/NOW Campaign, ensuring the future success of MCAD students.

Cumulative major gifts and commitments received June 1, 2012, through May 31, 2017.
