Careers in Furniture Design

Buyers for retail stores purchase product lines of furniture and accessories from manufacturers and furniture makers.
Develop and design retail store fixtures, display units, mannequins, etc.
Furniture designers create furniture for either mass or limited production, or create custom or "art furniture." Custom furniture is often designed and produced for individual residences, museums, specialty stores and other businesses that have specific needs.
Constructs furniture in assembly type fashion or aids with custom construction. Expert craftsmanship and attention to detail is necessary.
Covers a range of work from designing specialized theater or interior lighting (usually requiring special training /certification) to design of lighting for retail sale.
