This introductory class is tailored to those who have never painted and who are ready to take the plunge, and for more advanced painters who want to keep their current skills honed.

Working in our spacious, professional painting studio, students will use oil (strongly recommended) or acrylic paint to learn basic techniques of this expansive medium. The fundamental elements of color, design, form, and content will be explored through studio work and slide lectures. / Some basic knowledge of drawing is recommended. / Open to students ages 16 and above.

Called “the City of the Big Shoulders” by poet Carl Sandburg, Chicago has repeatedly reinvented itself, giving rise to iconic architectural forms such as the skyscraper, and residential styles ranging from the opulent mansions of the Gilded Age to the “Prairie School” homes of Frank Lloyd Wright and his followers. This class will explore Chicago’s architectural and artistic history through presentations featuring projected visuals and video clips.

Students in this workshop will learn about the cyanotype process, one of the first photographic processes from the 1840s. The cyanotype process produces beautiful blue images and doesn't require a darkroom or enlarger, just sunlight and water. Students will be given some background about the history of alternative processes, and cyanotypes in particular.
