Illustration and Comic Art

Comics Crash Course is a primer of the fundamental skills necessary for creating comics. Students will be guided to a working knowledge of crafting and producing comics, as well as mentored on how to develop their own creative voice. Weekly readings, technical demonstrations, and critiques of smaller assignments will supplement the completion of a short form comic over the five weeks. Topics covered will include craft and production, drawing, 2D art principles, narrative structure and concepts, critical thinking, and industry and publishing. Drawing or visual art experience is strongly recommended. / Open to students ages 16 and above.

Prerequisite: Adobe Photoshop and drawing or visual art experience is highly recommended

Recommended Software: Adobe Photoshop Required Hardware: Computer with internet access, digital camera or scanner

Required Textbook: Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga, and Graphic Novels, Scott McCloud (ISBN 13: 978-0060780944) Required Materials: 2-3 ply Bristol Board (11 x 17" or larger); 2B, B, or HB and H or 2H pencils; pencil sharpener; eraser; nib holder; nibs; technical pens sizes 0.03 and 0.05; 1 oz black India ink; size 2 round brush size 2; 18" T-Square; 12" or 18" ruler; and a flash drive.
