Introduction to Typography (Spring 2014)
Design and Digital Media
Where do our letters originate? Why do they look the way they do? And what makes for good type and typography? Type, the often-overlooked foundation of print and web design, is all around us. In this introductory level class, students will learn about the different schools of thought when it comes to type; learn basic typographical terminology and techniques; discuss what constitutes "good" and "bad" type in group discussions and critiques; and build upon their design vocabulary, while learning about type in a historical context.
Through a series of projects dealing with letter arrangement, editorial layout, and poster design, students will learn the significance that type choice or letterforms can play in a final design. Students will take a closer look at the traditional and contemporary typographic landscape from calligraphy to graffiti. / Each student will have access throughout the class to a lab workstation equipped with the latest software. / Facilities fee of $40 in addition to tuition. / Open to students ages 16 and above.
