Introduction to Web Design (Spring 2014)
Design and Digital Media
In this class, students will be introduced to basic web design principles with the objective of building a well-performing site using online tools and resources.
Topics of this class will include the basics of information architecture; graphic design and typographical principles for the web; image preparation; logo and identity creation; Content Management System (CSM) use and customization (i.e. WordPress, Cargo Collective and Tumblr); user-experience design and accessibility; usability testing; search engine optimization; and professional/personal networking and promotion.
This class will not involve extensive coding, but students will be introduced to some basic concepts of HTML and CSS. / Each student will have access throughout the class to a lab workstation equipped with the latest software. / Facilities fee of $40 in addition class tuition. / Open to students ages 18 and above.
Prerequisites: A working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and Mac OS X.
What to Bring: Pre-prepared content for a website that can be exhibited as an online portfolio (e.g. artwork; photos; curio collection; or small business, etc.); sketchbook; pen or pencil. / Students should anticipate spending an additional $100, roughly, in addition to class tuition, for the purchase of a domain and theme, if they do not already have one.
