Beginning Observational Drawing: Light and Shadow (Summer 2014)

This three‐week class will focus on value, or how to convey light and shadow in drawings.

Students will use charcoal as they learn to observe and draw the effects of light and shadow on objects. The class will explore a variety of additive and subtractive approaches. / Open to students ages 16 and above.

The Beginning Observational Drawing Series

This is the third class in a series of three‐week classes suitable for students with varied backgrounds and experiences in drawing. Each class will introduce students to the specific tools, techniques, vocabulary, and creative possibilities of this medium. Students will learn how to use the basic elements of drawing, such as line, value, texture, and shape, in order to capture and record the multi‐dimensional world and create visually stimulating compositions. Emphasis will be placed on observational drawing of still‐life subjects enhanced by experimental drawing techniques.

Complete one topic or the whole series_classes are designed to stand alone or complement one another.

What to Bring: 18 x 24" or larger drawing board; 1 pad of newsprint (18 x 24"); 1 piece of Strathmore 400 series drawing paper (white or cream); 1 piece of 16 x 20" Arches Cold Press (white/cream); pencils of different softnesses: HB, B, 2B, 4B; white Steadtler plastic eraser; large grey kneadable eraser; box of thin vine charcoal (medium to very soft. Willow charcoal works extremely well); 1 large med‐soft vine charcoal stick; 1 stick of compressed charcoal‐soft; 1 white charcoal pencil (soft); 1 black charcoal pencil (medium to soft); and roll 1" artists tape. On the first day, we will discuss paper options for the following classes. / A complete list of suggested materials will be discussed during the first class meeting.

What to Wear: Clothes appropriate for messy creativity, especially with charcoal. Dark colored clothing is most appropriate.
