Calligraphy (Fall 2014)
This class, designed for those interested in calligraphy, hand-lettering, and typography in general, will teach students the basics of calligraphy: Writing posture, ink control, and letterform structure.
Knowing calligraphy is an excellent way to become more familiar with letterforms of all types. According to master letterer Jon Contino, "Learning calligraphy will give you a much more intimate sense of each letter and it will help you to learn how to manipulate each one or many together to create a beautiful composition."
This class will focus on modern calligraphy, meaning that students will choose the style in which they write—from fresh and new, to elaborately classic. Students will learn to control the ink so that they gain the ability to write in whichever style feels more natural and appeals to their aesthetic sensibility. / Previous drawing experience helpful, but not required. / Materials fee of $15 in addition to class tuition. / Open to students ages 16 and above.
What to Bring: Examples of Calligraphic styles you would like to emulate.
What to Wear: Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.
