Figure Painting (Spring 2014)
This class is designed to provide students with the fundamental tools necessary to render the challenging, yet infinitely rewarding subject of the human figure. We will begin by finding the gesture in short poses, then progress on to exploring anatomy and the underlying structures of the figure; planar modeling; and seeking out color relationships via color temperature zones to transition from our simple gesture toward creating a compelling likeness of our model.
Working from direct observation of live models in a relaxed and supportive environment, students will develop the elemental skills of figure painting with the goals of both accuracy and individual expression. Working in oil paints strongly recommended. / Open to students ages 18 and above.
Prerequisites: Beginning Painting, Life Drawing, or equivalent experience.
What to Bring: 18 x 24” pad of newsprint paper; 24-pack box of medium vine charcoal; and 18 x 18” clipboard/drawing board. / A complete list of suggested materials will be discussed during the first class meeting.
