Fine Arts

Students in this class will collectively examine the concept of abstraction in art while they work through a variety of approaches to abstract painting in oils. Instructor-led demonstrations will be geared toward providing the students with both a jumping off point-meant to address how one begins making abstract work as well as encouragement of the student's further development toward creating their own, unique artistic style of painting and visual language.

Discussion of the history of abstract painting, as well as slide presentations of some of the genre's most famous practitioners (de Kooning, Pollock, Motherwell, and Mitchell), will provide inspiration and food for thought. During the critique process, students will address the questions, "How do we know it's finished?" and "How do we know it's good?" all within an environment where it's safe to experiment and where the focus is on process, rather than product. Lots of paint; lots of fun! / There will be no class on July 4. / Materials fee of $5 in addition to class tuition. / Students should anticipate additional costs for the purchasing of requisite painting supplies. / Open to students ages 18 and above.
