Summer Studio Kids Camps Ages 5-8

These week-long summer kids art camps combine creative themes with fun and challenging hands-on projects that change every week. Classes meet daily from 9:00 a.m.–noon or 1:00–4:00 p.m.

While children explore the images and concepts of each week's theme, they learn about topics including history, painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, and collage. This studio-style art-making also teaches the students about technical concepts such as color, line, composition, form, and texture. Students will share these new skills with family and friends in an exhibition-style show complete with kid-friendly hors d'oeuvres!

Note: We are unable to make any exceptions to the stated age limits for these classes. Thank you for your understanding.

Animals have a very special influence on many artists. In this camp, we will learn about artists who use animals to inspire in the artwork they make. We will create a variety of animal themed artworks using different techniques such as collage, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Our focus this week will be on vibrant colors, touchable textures, and animal shapes. We'll take a trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Art to see how many animal inspired artworks we can find.

Have you marveled at the mountains of Mars, fawned over the flower fields in Fairyland, or wondered at the wacky waves of Waterworld? Have you ever imagined faraway places no one has seen? Well, in this class you will use paint and other colorful media to create those places. We will be inspired by artists Charles Burchfield and Yves Tanguy. We will learn color mixing, how to create the illusion of form and space on a two-dimensional surface, and using our imaginations.
