Summer Studio Kids Camps Ages 5-8

These week-long summer kids art camps combine creative themes with fun and challenging hands-on projects that change every week. Classes meet daily from 9:00 a.m.–noon or 1:00–4:00 p.m.

While children explore the images and concepts of each week's theme, they learn about topics including history, painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, and collage. This studio-style art-making also teaches the students about technical concepts such as color, line, composition, form, and texture. Students will share these new skills with family and friends in an exhibition-style show complete with kid-friendly hors d'oeuvres!

Note: We are unable to make any exceptions to the stated age limits for these classes. Thank you for your understanding.

A line is a dot that went on a walk… but in this drawing inspired camp, we’ll take our dot out to run a marathon! We’ll look at straight, curvy, zigzagged, and wiggly lines, and at how we can create realistic and abstract artworks using this very important element of art. We’ll experiment using a variety of art materials, like graphite, pens, and paint while drawing creative and imaginative lines. We’ll take a field trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Art to see how other artists use line in their artwork.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Jul 5 - Jul 8
9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

There’s no disguising it; this mask making class rules! We will explore the history of mask making from many different cultures; then we will make our own mixed media masks. The week will include a visit to the Minneapolis Institute of Art to look at and discuss masks of African and Native American cultures. We will use papier mâché to create a form for our marks. Next, we will use paper, yarn, fabric, feathers, buttons, beads, and other materials to embellish it and create textures and details.
