Camera Trapping (Fall 2014)

Photography and Filmmaking

Photos and videos taken by camera traps not only allow scientists to study rarely seen species, but they can also provide wildlife photographers and videographers with the means to create mesmerizing images of animals. This class will teach the fundamentals of camera trapping within the historical context of camera trapping dating from the early 1900s to the present.

Lectures will feature still images from the earliest camera trap experiments, as well as photos and videos from more sophisticated camera trap setups that are being used today.

Check out some striking images from Sam's previous exhibition at the National Museum of Wildlife Art and see video and listen to his interview on NPR's Science Friday.

At outdoor locations both on and off-campus, students will gain hands-on experience using their own camera traps to capture images of wildlife in the Twin Cities. Images captured in the field will be viewed and critiqued in class.

Two of the five class meetings will take place on-location (field trip locations TBD). / No prior experience with photography or videography is required. However, students should have a general interest in wildlife. / Materials fee of $105 in addition to class tuition. / Open to students ages 18 and above.
