Cyanotypes Workshop (Spring 2014)

Photography and Filmmaking

Students in this workshop will learn about the cyanotype process, one of the first photographic processes from the 1840s.

The cyanotype process produces beautiful blue images and doesn't require a darkroom or enlarger, just sunlight and water. Students will be given some background about the history of alternative processes, and cyanotypes in particular.

During the first class session, students will apply sensitizer to paper to make solargrams and make prints made from desktop negatives from the images they bring along. During the second class, students will make more prints and will try out toner baths that will completely change the coloration of the blue prints in amazing ways. Students will take home their new collection of cyanotypes, and will have discovered a process worth more investigation. / Materials fee of $30 in addition to class tuition. / Open to students ages 16 and above.

What to Bring: Notebook; pen or pencil; small objects, toys, botanical specimens, or something similar to place on unexposed paper; flash drive with two or three favorite photo images, including at least one self-portrait (negatives will be made from these).
