Pre-College Portfolio Preparation Ages 15-18

This intensive workshop will provide you with an individualized road map to create a successful art school application portfolio and the experience of creating one portfolio-quality drawing while in a nurturing classroom setting. The portfolio is the single most important component of an art school application, and colleges across the nation are stepping up their requirements for admission. Most require several observational drawings, or drawings made from what we see, rather than from our imagination or a photograph. This studio drawing class is designed to help motivated visual arts students develop exemplary observational drawings for their portfolios. Students will work with still life, landscape, interior, and figurative subject matter as they explore the fundamentals of a good drawing: composition; structure; value; line; and expression. Studio instruction will be supplemented by art history discussions, visiting artist and MCAD Admissions staff presentations, and regular homework assignments. / Professional nude models will be used in this class. / Open to students ages 15–18.

What to bring: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook. Student’s portfolio of all/any artwork they have already made, and want to include in their portfolio. 18 x 24” drawing paper pad; pencils, art supplies (anything to draw with). A complete list of suggested materials will be discussed during the first class meeting.

Prerequisite: Previous drawing experience helpful, but not required.
