Used by contemporary artists as a means to explore identity, the photographic portrait has moved away from its commercial roots. People make portraits of their friends and family members not just as a historical record of the individual, but also to push the boundaries of what a photograph can say about its subject. During this class, students will explore the world of contemporary portrait photography. They will be encouraged to practice formulating ideas prior to photographing, while also learning how to constructively critique one another's work. Some focus will be placed on the non-traditional portrait by exploring its narrative, aesthetic, and emotional aspects. Students will work with tableau (staged) and documentary (candid) photographic styles. In doing so, they will develop the ability to recognize the quality of natural light and to combine it with other essential tools for creating excellent portraits. / Open to students ages 16 and above.

What to bring: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook; USB drive, blank CD, or cloud storage option for saving work; digital SLR camera. Students should bring their favorite photograph of themselves or their favorite photograph of another person

Prerequisite: Working knowledge of Mac OS X, DSLR photography, and manual exposure. Experience with Photoshop is helpful, but not required.
