Fine Arts

In this introductory portraiture drawing course, students will learn a variety of skills that will further their understanding of the complexities in depicting the human face and body. Charcoal and graphite will be used most heavily in this course, and students will gain confidence and aptitude with those mediums. Students will learn the importance of observation when considering the human form, and each lesson will be made up of a variety of exercises to help ease the potentially overwhelming subject of the portrait.

Light, space, and composition will all be emphasized, along with formal technique in considering the measurements of the human face. Students will develop and use the critical language to discuss technique with one another during informal critiques taking place within the lessons. Demonstrations with mirrors, live models, and material techniques will all be given by the instructor upon introduction of a project. Students, through this course, will gain confidence in their approach to portraiture, and an appreciation for the skill and practice needed for success. / Materials fee of $10 in addition to class tuition. / Open to students ages 18 and above.
