Ages 15+: Portfolio Preparation: Drawing for High School and Transfer Students (Fall 2014)

Pre-College Portfolio Preparation Ages 15-18

This studio drawing class is designed to help motivated visual arts students develop exemplary observational drawings for their portfolios.

The portfolio is the single most important component of an art school application, and colleges across the nation are stepping up their requirements for admission. Most require several observational drawings, or drawings made from what we see, rather than from our imagination or a photograph.

Students will work with still life, landscape, interior, and figurative subject matter as they explore the fundamentals of a good drawing: Composition; structure; value; line; and expression. Studio instruction will be supplemented by art history discussions, visiting artist and MCAD Admissions staff presentations, and regular homework assignments. / Previous drawing experience helpful, but not required. / Professional nude models will be used in this class. / Open to students ages 15 and above.

What to Bring: 1 pad of newsprint (18 x 24"); 1 piece of Strathmore 400 series drawing paper (white or cream); 1 sketchbook of your choice; pencils of different softness: HB, B, 2B, 4B; white Steadtler plastic eraser; large grey kneadable eraser; several sticks of thin vine charcoal (med-very soft); 1 large med-soft Vine Charcoal; 1 stick of compressed charcoal-soft; 1 white charcoal pencil (soft); and roll 1" artists tape. On the first day, we will discuss paper options and a few inexpensive drawing materials for color studies. / Students should anticipate an additional cost of roughly $75-100 in total for materials (not included in tuition). / A complete list of suggested materials will be discussed during the first class meeting.
