Girls Rock Fashion Goes Bling!: Turning Fashion on Its Head (Summer 2013)
Summer Studio Kids Ages 8-11
Throughout history, people have ornamented themselves using such materials as paint, flowers, feathers, beads, precious metals and gemstones, and now, bling! This week, we'll look into the ways this ornamentation becomes amazing art forms.
Using colorful and iridescent paints, up-cycled costume jewelry, sturdy paper, and cardboard, we'll create our own over-the-top, fun, sparkly, and colorful outfits. We'll also look at how designers consider environmental issues and use recycled materials and make our own gorgeous layered skirts using colorful recycled plastic bags. During the week, we'll take a field trip to the nearby Minneapolis Institute of Arts to see, among other artworks, the richly patterned beaded moccasins of Native Americans, an ancient Roman makeup vial and an Egyptian makeup palette from 300 B.C.!
Friday afternoon, we'll share our fab wearable artwork with family and friends in a fun and relaxed "mock" fashion show. And as always, we'll be thinking, discussing, and journaling about issues specific to girls. "All that glitters...." is fun!!
