STAMP! Joyous, Inventive Printmaking (Summer 2013)
Summer Studio Kids Ages 8-11
Do you love color and pattern and making stuff you can use? This week, we'll experiment with a wide variety of stamps–some we find and some we'll make. Then, we'll use our smorgasbord of stamps to create cool patterns on fabric using colored inks. From this fabric, we'll sew crazily creative banners for our rooms and another project: Perhaps a one of a kind bandana for you or your pet, a pillow cover, a belt or scarf or a project of your own design.
In addition to the beautiful fabric inks we'll use in stamping, we'll also embellish our creations with colorful embroidery floss and buttons. For inspiration, we'll have a blast learning about the important role textile art has played in many cultural traditions (silk textiles of China and Japan, the Star Quilts of the Dakota people, who are wrapped in these on important occasions from birth to death, and the pan dau and story cloths of the Hmong people.) We'll visit the nearby Minneapolis Institute of Arts to experience, in person, the powerful history of textiles.
We'll have a colorful selection of our own creations, stamped with the pattern of history, on display for families during our Friday afternoon exhibition!
