Illuminated Illusions AM
Summer Studio Kids Camps Ages 5-8
Has your child ever made bunny, puppy, or even monster hand shadows against their bedroom wall with the help of the bedside lamp? It can be fun to think about the fact that many artists have been awed and inspired by this same phenomenon!
This week, students will explore shadows and illumination, and how to use these ideas to create awesome works of art. The ancient art of shadow puppetry, as well as contemporary art works by artists such as Christian Boltanski and Tony Oursler, will serve as inspiration.
Students will create their own shadow puppets and images on transparencies that will be projected in large size on the wall. The focus of the learning will be on concepts of opacity and translucency, overlapping, repetition, color, and storytelling.
The week will include a mini-field trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts to view art works that feature digital illumination and projection. At the end of the week, families and friends will be invited to view the students’ magical presentation of shadow and light.
Students must be at least five years of age, and have attended kindergarten, prior to the first day of their class. View complete policies here.
