Career Development Department Mission

The MCAD Career Development Office works collaboratively across the college to provide students and alumni with career integration opportunities and employment consultation as well as to promote enriching external opportunities and visibility in creative industries.

Director of Career Development Primary Functions

The director of Career Development will deliver current and relevant industry professional practice content, market the office, its internship program, and support services, and will create and promote career events and opportunities. Training and assistance on job search techniques and career opportunities will be provided for students through individual appointments, group presentations, class visits, and in coordination with Academic Affairs, department chairs, and faculty.

Office Administration:

  • Supervise Assistant to the Director of Career Services and Graduate Assistant.
  • Manage annual budget.

Internal Functions:

  • Participate in academic planning processes and committees as requested. 
  • Participate in school-wide and other departments’ events, including the annual art sale, new student orientations, alumni career development programs and other events.
  • Continually assess and update professional development resources including handouts, electronic subscriptions, and career library.
  • Plan and manage annual Career Development events, including the Internship Fair, and the Emerging Talent Showcase portfolio recruiting event (in which over 100 industry professionals visit the campus to review the work of graduating students).
  • Administer MCAD’s Internship program including registration, evaluation, and grading.
  • Manage the Career Development Job and Opportunities website.
  • Coordinate with Institutional Data reporting on internship and job placement survey results with the Office of Accreditation and Assessment.
  • Collaborate with Institutional Advancement (Alumni Affairs, and Grants and Projects Administration), and Student Affairs (Learning Center)

External Networking:

  • Maintain existing and initiate new relationships in the business and art communities to develop internship and employment opportunities for students and alumni
  • Continually establish new strategies to build and increase MCAD’s visibility in creative industries using marketing campaigns, site visits, online strategies, and other techniques.
  • Work closely with MCAD Alumni Affairs to strengthen student and alumni events and collaborations.


Education: Bachelor’s degree; Associate degree; counseling certification or equivalent. Background in art and design preferred.

Experience: 3+ years experience in creative industries, career development in a higher education environment, recruiting events for student employment, or admissions preferred. Keen knowledge of and appreciation for the visual arts, design, entrepreneurial studies, and liberal arts. 


  • Excellent networking and communication skills to enrich existing and build new external opportunities for students, and partnerships for the college
  • Excellent oral, written, presentation, and technological skills are required
  • Detail-oriented and well-organized with strong follow-through
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively across disciplines with administrators, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to supervise office team and budget
  • Knowledge of national higher education issues
