A Gallery 148 show featuring international students from four different countries.
Friday, October 11, 6:30 p.m.–8:30 p.m.
Stand Up, Sit Down is an interactive gallery show that features artwork from five artists representing different countries and disciplines. The work compares personal experiences with the educational philosophies of each artist's native community in China, Norway, India, and Italy. Working collaboratively, the theme of education and personal development is explored through installation pieces, publications, and interactive experiences.
"Stand Up, Sit Down" is the phrase used to begin classes in many countries. Students stand up to greet the teacher and then sit down only when the teacher tells them to do so. This command is used as a summation of the artwork in the gallery, referring to the restrictive structure of school life mingling with bitterness and nostalgia.
