Cornelius (Neil) Coons began his career in Los Angeles, graduating from the California Institute of the Arts with a degree in graphic design before finding his way to the Midwest. Much of his early career was spent as an art director for design and advertising agencies, where he led multi-platform national campaigns for clients such as Target, Microsoft, Kmart, and Gap.

Coons maintains a studio practice in Northeast Minneapolis and is currently founding a small-run publishing house, GRRAY, focused on critical arts writing and short fiction.
