Melodee Strong works as a freelance illustrator and designer, studio painter, and muralist. She has been contracted as a teaching artist and arts-integration coordinator in local public schools and has taught painting, drawing, illustration, and design courses at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts and MCAD.
Strong has completed illustration projects for Maren Green Publishing, Target Corporation, and Mpls.St.Paul Magazine. Her illustrations have been published in eighteen children's books and her studio work has been exhibited in various galleries around the Twin Cities, including her own gallery and retail space, which opened in July 2012. She has completed twenty mural and large-scale projects at various schools, churches, and public locations throughout Minneapolis, St. Paul, and surrounding areas. Her illustrations have received awards from the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles and the Society of Illustrators New York. Strong has also received Moonbeam, Teachers’ Choice, and Mom’s Choice Awards for her work in children’s books.
Strong has been teaching at MCAD since 2009. Most recently, she was the project manager for a collaborative design project with the Center for Sustainable Polymers at the University of Minnesota and MCAD called Catalyst 4 Chemistry.
