Robert Murphy lives in Saint Paul and divides his time as a photographer between Minnesota and the desert regions of Southern California. He has taught photography and visual communications at the college level for over 20 years. His approach to teaching comes directly from his career as a visual artist and emphasizes critical thinking, technique, discipline, and openness to new ideas. He strives to help his students find and enjoy the rigor of learning and create work that is diverse, sophisticated and reflective of intense commitment.
Murphy’s photographs have been exhibited at major museums and galleries and his work is included in public and private collections. He has been awarded fellowships from the McKnight Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Jerome Foundation.
