Work Created in 20th Century World History

The twentieth century was a time of unprecedented change, growth and conflict. This course will survey the twentieth century, covering the great political themes of the age such as the World Wars, the rise and fall of Fascism and Communism, Colonialism, and Globalization. At the same time, the course will examine social and cultural trends such as the rise of Consumer Culture, the Mass Media and the Electronics Revolution. Particular emphasis will be placed on how twentieth-century artists participated in their worlds, both as interpreters and agents of change. Students will critically reflect on the continuing influence of the twentieth century on the twenty-first century. Class sessions are primarily lecture-based but with ample discussion. Students will complete in-class examinations and write research papers.
