Andrea Carlson ’05, MFA, is the artist behind The Uncompromising Hand, a project that speaks to the destruction of Spirit Island.

Spirit Island was a limestone island that once existed near the Stone Arch Bridge. This site, which was sacred to the Dakota people, was gradually dismantled between the 1890s and 1960s. On Friday and Saturday night, Carlson will project hand animated recreations of the island with accompanying text in Dakota and English, scrolling horizontally with the water flow.
