Adjunct Faculty Jennifer Danos and Assistant Professor Natasha Pestich held a show at the Seerveld Gallery at Trinity College in Palos Heights, Illinois this past March. The show was titled "Save us all from a Hope Tree that has lost the faculty of putting out blossoms."

Cindy Gilbert (Faculty and Program Coordinator of Sustainable Design Online) was an invited judge for the 2011 Biomimicry Student Design Challenge contest for The Biomimicry Institute. The student team winners were awarded a grand prize of $5,000.

Continuing Studies Instructor Holly Robbins is working with AIGA Minnesota to revitalize the annual Green Leaf Award that recognizes novel sustainability projects in the field of graphic design in the Minnesota region. The team hopes to bring national attention to this award and instate it as a national AIGA award in the future.

Continuing Studies Professor Arlene Birt was an invited presenter at the annual IXDA conference in Dublin, Ireland. Her workshop focused on how to leverage information design to communicate sustainability messages, and how to develop individual sustainability “background stories.”

Dr. Anna Tahinci (Liberal Arts Adjunct Faculty) delivered a lecture titled "Rodin and America: Auguste Rodin and his American Collectors" at Macalester College in January 2012.

Tahinci also delivered a lecture titled "French Women Artists and exhibiting the feminine side of a permanent collection: the "Elles" exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou (2009-2011)" at Macalester in February 2012.

Dr. Kris Belden-Adams (Assistant Professor, Liberal Arts) published her paper “Reconsidering Roland Barthes: Tense Collision as Photographic ‘Punctum’." She presented the paper at the Fourth Biennial Art History Symposium “The Madness of Photography” in February 2012 at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Belden-Adams' paper was one of four selected from forty submitted abstracts.

Liberal Arts Professor Dr. Anna Tahinci presented her paper "Constructing, Deconstructing, and Reconstructing the Mediterranean in Contemporary Greek Art: Kostas Tsoklis, Jannis Kounellis, Dimitris Alithinos" as part of the panel titled "Redefining Mediterranean Aesthetics" at the College Art Association annual conference in Los Angeles in February.

"The Future of Art and Design Education": Bernard Canniffe, Professor and Chair of Design Department, was the keynote speaker at a design conference held at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in March 2012. Canniffe also led a workshop with business leaders about innovation strategies.

"Design Needs to Grow Up and Design Education Must Change": Canniffe also spoke about PIECE Studio and Community Engagement at the Design Ethos Conference in April 2012.

MCAD faculty Natasha Pestich and Jennifer Danos, along withMcKnight Visual Artist Fellowship recipient Marcus Young, were exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts through the Minnesota Artist Exhibition Program in October 2011. Semblances investigated the concept of semblance (guise) in the context of the museum, using multiple approaches to play with and disrupt the museum site.

Karen Wirth represented MCAD at an international President’s Forum in Beijing, China at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in November. MCAD was one of only 4 U.S. schools invited to participate. Other participants included colleges from Singapore, Glasgow, New South Wales Australia, Tokyo and Qatar. The forum was initiated by Science Applications International Corporation chancellor Tony Jones and CAFA president Pan Gongkai. MCAD drawing work was also represented in an exhibition at the CAFA Museum.

The MCAD Gallery exhibition Intersections: Women, Leadership and the Power of Collaboration opened on January 20, 2012, and continued through February 26. The show brings together current or recent women studio department chairs, and their student or alum collaborators.  Eleven different Twin Cities colleges or universities are represented in the show. MCAD participants include faculty members Karen Wirth Stevie Rexroth and Katherine Turczan, alumni Isa Gagarin ’08 and Catrin Magnusson ’09, MFA, and student Gracemarie Keaton-Stasi.
