IDEM

Students Carlen Goldhorn, Addie Elling, Welsa Stone, Kathleen Law, Katie Hill, Matthew Novak, and Emma Conner will be featured in the upcoming exhibition Idem. The exhibition, part of the course Professional Practice, will explore identity as it relates to the objects in our lives.

"As artists we are also collectors, and in a way, hoarders of objects. We draw inspiration from the things around us. [In Idem] we are exploring the concept of identity by collecting objects as stand-ins for ourselves; representing who we are as people and as artists."

Rob Fischer, Untitled (Glass House)

Rob Fischer ’93 currently has a solo exhibition at New York's Derek Eller Gallery.

Splitting his time between two studios—one in the woods of Northern Minnesota and another in Brooklyn, New York—Fischer is known for using dilapidated materials to methodically compose sculptural installations.

MCAD Students at Q.arma Building

Seven MCAD students presented their work during last night's First Thursday event in Northeast Minneapolis's Q.arma Building.

Floodplain

Chad Rutter ’06, whose latest work explores American geography and values through photography, sculpture, and other media, will be in an upcoming exhibition as part of the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program.

River Media Art Center Winona

A number of MCAD alumni are working to open the new River Media Art Center Winona. This will be a space for "artists to develop and produce work free from the pressures of the commercial workspace."

AIGA MN Design Show

MCADians will be judging the AIGA Minnesota Annual Design Show's Green Leaf Award category. The three judges include MCAD's sustainable design program co-founders and instructors Curt McNamara and Holly Robbins, along with Rita Penrod, an alum of the program.

Photography by Cy DeCosse ’52 will be on view next month in an exhibition that showcases beauty in the night.

Scott Nedrelow

Faculty member Scott Nedrelow has been featured in ArtForum's Critics' Picks for his "ghostly" paintings and videos in the show Afterlight, on view through Saturday at David Petersen Gallery in Minneapolis.

Printshop staff and adjunct faculty member Diana Eicher recently gave a lecture at the Minnesota Contemporary Quilters Spring Retreat. Her presentation, titled "My Love for Ink, Squeegees, and Screenprinting," focused on how she uses personal themes and experiences of social justice issues in her own work.

An exhibition celebrating communication, collaboration, and illustration and featuring the creative works of a number of MCAD students and alumni opens on campus tomorrow. With an aim of pushing the boundaries of communication into a playful and artistic realm, this show comprises the works of eight artists who have worked collaboratively to create eight individual but related pieces.

Bug the Dog

Julie M. Fakler ’96 has received a McKnight Established Artist grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council that will allow her to create portraits of animals rescued by SAFE Sanctuary, a non-profit animal rescue group in Faribault, Minnesota.

Artists on the Verge

Faculty member Piotr Szyhalski, along with Northern Spark-creator Steve Dietz, has co-directed Artists on the Verge 5, now on view at the Soap Factory. 

Tom Garrett Illustates an Original "Dude"

Faculty member Tom Garrett recently illustrated the origins of the word "dude" for Scholastic's Scope magazine.

Paganistan by Murphy Pizza

Faculty member Murphy Pizza's book Paganistan: Contemporary Pagan Community in Minnesota's Twin Cities will be released by Ashgate Publishing on April 17, 2014.

Taylor Baldry ’07, along with Zorn Corporation and MNArtists.org, has created a new, twice-monthly art "fun-ducational" video series called Pangaea Station.

Cindy Gilbert, director of MCAD's Master of Arts in Sustainable Design program, has been invited to lead an Open Meetup entitled "To MOOC or Not to MOOC: Let's Talk About Online Edu" at the  National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance's (NCIIA's) annual Open Conference in San Jose, California, in late March.
