Dr. Anna Tahinci (Liberal Arts Adjunct Faculty) delivered a lecture titled "Rodin and America: Auguste Rodin and his American Collectors" at Macalester College in January 2012.

Tahinci also delivered a lecture titled "French Women Artists and exhibiting the feminine side of a permanent collection: the "Elles" exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou (2009-2011)" at Macalester in February 2012.
 


Rochelle Schultz Brancato ’00, was appointed to the Board of Directors for Museum Alliance of Rapid City, Inc. dba, The Journey Museum. Located in Rapid City, South Dakota, The Journey Museum brings together four major prehistoric and historic collections to tell the complete story of the Western Great Plains. Brancato also chairs the Board’s marketing and public relations committee.

Work by Howard Quednau (Acting Chair/Associate Professor of Fine Arts) was selected for the Top Purchase Award at the 46th Annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas.


Melissa Breitenfeldt '06 unveiled her project for Victory Motorcycles at the Australian Motorcycle Expo on the Gold Coast in February 2012. All artwork was hand drawn with Sharpie markers onto a motorcycle, which took over sixty hours of research, planning, and hand sketching to finish all seven scenes on the bike. All scenes are filled with symbolism of justice and victory.
 


Lyz Wendland MFA '09 held an exhibition at the Gage Family Art Gallery at Augsburg College from January to March 2012. The exhibition, "Within Lines," explored abstract imagery and commented on the simple function of a line.

Dr. Kris Belden-Adams (Assistant Professor, Liberal Arts) published her paper “Reconsidering Roland Barthes: Tense Collision as Photographic ‘Punctum’." She presented the paper at the Fourth Biennial Art History Symposium “The Madness of Photography” in February 2012 at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Belden-Adams' paper was one of four selected from forty submitted abstracts.
 


Recent 2012 graduate Loriana Tosca (BFA, Photography) was the first Photography intern at the Walker Art Center from March to May 2012. She worked as assistant to Cameron Wittig (MCAD MFA alum) and Gene Pittman.

Liberal Arts Professor Dr. Anna Tahinci presented her paper "Constructing, Deconstructing, and Reconstructing the Mediterranean in Contemporary Greek Art: Kostas Tsoklis, Jannis Kounellis, Dimitris Alithinos" as part of the panel titled "Redefining Mediterranean Aesthetics" at the College Art Association annual conference in Los Angeles in February.


An article by Dr. Kris Belden-Adams (Assistant Professor, Liberal Arts) , "Don't Hate the 'Index': Reconsidering the Promise of Peirce for Photographic Theory," appeared in the winter issue of Afterimage: The Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism.

Liberal Arts Chair and Professor Dr. Thomas O. Haakenson was awarded a J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) for the 2012 Fulbright German Studies Seminar, which took place in Berlin, Germany and Brussels, Belgium, from June 12-23, 2012.

 


Lauren Zuckerman '81 was the editor on Billy Bob Thorton's "Jayne Mansfield's Car", a 1960s era drama about two families from different countries whose cultures clash. Zuckerman attended the film's premiere at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival this past February.
 


Work by Stephen Klassen MFA '09 was exhibited in a show titled “Meditation on Trees." The exhibition was held at the Foster Gallery of the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire in February and March of 2012.

Patrick Kelley '06 was awarded Grand Prize Winner in the 2012 National Geographic Montana Photography Contest. He was also featured in a group show at the Two Tigers Gallery titled "The View From Earth."

Recent alum Kayla Plosz '12 held an exhibition at Soo Visual Arts Center in February/March 2012. The show was Plosz's first solo exhibition. This is the tenth year that SooVAC has hosted an exhibition of selected works from the MCAD MFA Program.

Bethany Kalk '05 exhibited in a group show at the Rowan County Art Center in Morehead, Kentucky. A collaborative project by Kalk, Caleb Coppock, and Daphne Eck, "Here in the Strata" is an art-based interpretation of Rowan County, Kentucky using elements from the physical landscape.

Students and graduates of MCAD filled the windows lining Target headquarters to create a street-level gallery. The Target blog proclaims: "Defining beauty and creativity are forever debatable. But there’s little disagreement that adding art to cityscapes and supporting local artists is a good thing."
 


David Friedman, MFA '67, held a show entitled "Color as a Second Language" at Gallery on the Pali in Honolulu, Hawaii in February and March 2012. Friedman’s luminous canvases capture the brilliance and vitality of Hawaii’s extraordinary beauty. He also co-founded Electric Gallery, a virtual gallery on Hawaii community television.
 


Beth Shapiro-Prusky '81 graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2010 where she earned both a post-baccalaureate and an MFA. She has been working for the PAFA Museum since 2010 in Museum Education as an outreach teaching artist.

Mary Longshore '11 has completed multiple freelance projects, including illustrations for Habitat for Humanity.


Tara Carone '11 was hired as a full time position at Hanover Accessories in Minneapolis. The woman who interviewed her, Jen Sheeler, is also an alum. Carone will be doing pattern and product design for tween girl accessories and pet accessories.

Mary Nelson '11 is an in-house designer at Hillcrest Media Group where she designs book covers and formats the interior of books. She also provides freelance illustration work in-house for various companies.

Jake Szymanski '10 of the BSc program is now a brander planner at space150; he is well-regarded as their "resident futurist." space150 posted his Slideshare presentation titled "Trending the Future - Gaming Beyond Reality." It has now accrued over 47,000 views.
