In December 2010, Kevin Byrne (Professor, BSc) presented and posted "STEEPed In Urban Futures," which featured work by MCAD students in the BSc Futures course. The article has accrued nearly a thousand hits.

MCAD was well-represented in the prestigious Society of Illustrators New York competition. The following students were awarded in New York City with an exhibition, and were published in the Society's annual awards book.

During this year's warm winter, Professor Andy Ducett guided families in the creation of various cardboard constructions at the winter version of Walker Open Field.

"The Future of Art and Design Education": Bernard Canniffe, Professor and Chair of Design Department, was the keynote speaker at a design conference held at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in March 2012. Canniffe also led a workshop with business leaders about innovation strategies.

"Design Needs to Grow Up and Design Education Must Change": Canniffe also spoke about PIECE Studio and Community Engagement at the Design Ethos Conference in April 2012.
 


Bernard Canniffe, Professor and Chair of Design Department, exhibited work at the China Poster Biennial 2011. Three of his posters were selected for the exhibition, and will be published in a soon to be released book.


MCAD faculty Natasha Pestich and Jennifer Danos, along with McKnight Visual Artist Fellowship recipient Marcus Young, were exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts through the Minnesota Artist Exhibition Program in October 2011. "Semblances" investigated the concept of semblance (guise) in the context of the museum, using multiple approaches to play with and disrupt the museum site.

MCAD faculty, alumni, and current students were hard to miss in Quodlibetica's winter constellation, The Icy Issue, which takes a far-ranging look at the Twin Cities' best winter art offerings.

 


Patrick Kelley

Patrick Kelley (Photography '06) was recetly awarded the Grand Prize at the 2012 National Geographic Montana Photography contest.

Kelley is also being featured in a group show at the Two Tigers Gallery in Northeast. The show is titled "The View from Earth".


Karen Wirth represented MCAD at an international President’s Forum in Beijing, China at the Central Academy of Art in November. MCAD was one of only 4 U.S. schools invited to participate; others included colleges from Singapore, Glasgow, New South Wales Australia, Tokyo and Qatar. The forum was initiated by SAIC chancellor Tony Jones and CAFA president Pan Gongkai. MCAD drawing work was also represented in an exhibition at the CAFA Museum.


Karen Wirth - Intersections

The MCAD Gallery exhibition "Intersections: Women, Leadership and the Power of Collaboration" opened on January 20, 2012, and continued through February 26. The show brings together current or recent women studio department chairs, and their student or alum collaborators.  Eleven different Twin Cities colleges or universities are represented in the show. The exhibition is Karen Wirth’s sabbatical project, following last year’s leadership mentorship program at The New School University in NY, through an American Council on Education Fellowship. Other MCAD participants are faculty Stevie Rexroth and Katherine Turczan, alums Isa Gagarin and Catrin Magnusson, and student Gracemarie Keaton-Stasi.


Krista Leraas had a succesful Kickstarter campaign - which exceeded its original $8,900 goal - to create student-run Garden Center Food Shelves that will raise money for need-based groups.

Katie Maren directed, animated and edited the music video for Still Pacific's track "Mine for the Time" in collaboration with MCAD alum Mike P. Nelson. Doug Gander and Jennifer Garza, also MCAD alumni, also worked on the project.

Curt McNamara attended RISD annual Bucky Fuller conference. He discussed his online MCAD class about Buckminster Fuller, Geometry of Thinking.

Britni West (Filmmaking '08) received $20,000 for an as yet untitled feature-length narrative. This film tells te story of Etta, an overweight woman in her forties who has spent most of her life living with her friend and platonic partner Carol. The two spend their days on the outskirts of a small town feeding pigeons from the front stoop of their apartment building and enjoying life free from the cares of a 'typical' woman.


Karen Wilcox (Open Studio '01) has been invited to exhibit two of her wall installations entitled "Muse" and "28 Prayers" in "Art on the Plains XI", an exhibition running January 28-May 20 at the Plains Art Museum in Fargo, ND. There is also a gallery talk by Juror Hesse McGraw, Chief Curator, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art.

MCAD received 13 awards from the 2012 Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles student competition! The work was selected from over 1400 entries and the jury included Tim Ramos - Art Director, Disney Studios Home Entertainment + Michael Humphries - Art Director, Background Artist, Disney Feature Animation & Instructor, Art Center College of Design.

An essay by Karen Wirth, Nothing In Its Place: The Blank Page, was published in the Journal of Artists’ Books, JAB 30. The article examines how the use of empty pages and negative space delivers content and meaning in artists’ books, form Ed Ruscha’s 9 Swimming Pools and a Glass to J. Meejin Yoon’s, Absence, a spare all white book about the missing Twin Towers.
