The term “larval” describes a specific developmental phase in the lives of insects and other such animals, which is the earliest active stage from their hatching. In its shape and anatomy, the larval form is entirely distinct from the animal’s subsequent mutations. As such, that which is larval is not only primal, energetic, fresh, and fundamental, but also immature, transitional, vulnerable, and crude. This tension undergirds the work of these four MCAD graduate students as they explore new sculptural possibilities through the lens of the fundamental, or “larval” aspects of their more developed artistic practices.
