Pre-College Summer Session

Every summer, high school students spend three weeks at MCAD finding out what college life is really like.

The Pre-College Summer Session at MCAD is a three-week, residential program that allows high school students to try out their skills at a college level. Students pursue a major and receive three college credits at the program's completion.

"Going to PCSS was the best experience I've had. It's okay to be afraid, be in the moment. Try making memories with those you met. Explore more of art, explore more of life."

What surprised you the most about the Pre-College Summer Session?

During those 3 weeks of the program, I knew my artistic skills would be pushed to the limit. In such little amount of time, my art grew far more than I expected it to. The environment of the college was welcoming, it made me feel comfortable with those I was around with. Although I felt nervous and afraid I, was able to meet people I will never forget. They made me feel like I was part of MCAD and I made my memories I will never forget.

What aspect of the program has had the biggest impact on you?

The biggest aspect of the program that impacted me was the amount of time I had in my studio. I was able to work on my art and finish it with quality. During this time I was able to ask for help from the TA's and other staff.

How has your artistic practice changed since the program?

Going into the program I expected to only do graphic design, but once I left I wanted to explore different mediums. I want to combine design with different aspects of art. I want to explore more than just design.

What was your favorite experience outside of the classroom?

My favorite experience outside the school was exploring Minneapolis. It is a city that has amazing architecture. The people in Minneapolis are caring and friendly. Not only was the city amazing but seeing the Mississippi River for the first time was a great experience. The whole city is filled with amazing food as well, which I absolutely loved.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about attending the Pre-College Summer Session?

Going into the program I was afraid. I was afraid of going outside my comfort zone, eventually, this fear I had was gone. I'm not going to say "Don't be afraid." In fact be afraid. Be afraid of the new. Taking such as big step forward in life was frightening, but that fear I had made the experience better than ever. Going to PCSS was the best experience I've had. It's okay to be afraid, be in the moment. Try making memories with those you met. Explore more of art, explore more of life.
