Dear MCAD community:

I am thrilled to be joining you on as the next president of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. I am so honored to join MCAD and I am looking forward to learning more about your passions and aspirations for the years to come.

Over the past twenty years I have focused on the powerful roles that both creativity and making play in celebrating culture, narrating the human experience, and addressing some of the most pressing issues of our times. I have dedicated myself to art and design education with the belief that innovation, diversity, and global perspectives are key to creating vibrant creative communities.

Throughout the interview process, I was struck with the profound sense of community that permeates throughout MCAD and I was moved by the socially engaged ethos that informed my conversations. My experience reminded me of a Zulu phrase, "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu," which roughly means a person is a person because of people.

My family and I are very excited to immerse ourselves at MCAD and to get to know the Twin Cities and this diverse cultural region. My partner, Cristin, is also involved in the arts. She is an art historian, curator, and educator who works extensively on the study of textiles and the arts of South and Southeast Asia. She is also deeply involved in contemporary craft and is currently chair of the Selection Committee for the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Our children, Haroun (age 7) and Kusum (age 5), are creative, energetic, and particularly excited about exploring some of the many lakes in the area—both in the summer and the winter.

I am excited to begin working with all of you to move this great institution forward and build on its many past accomplishments.

Thank you and see you on campus soon.
