Minneapolis, MN—August 14, 2019—The Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) Master of Fine Arts program is pleased to present Break Every Rule, the 2019 fall exhibition showcasing the work of first- and second-year MFA students. Presenting a variety of disciplines including painting, comic art, graphic design, illustration, interactive/digital media, performance, and sculpture, the exhibition will feature works by 27 artists and designers. It will take place at the program’s gallery space, right up the street from MCAD’s main campus, and just one block from the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia).

For this year’s annual showcase of all current MFA students at MCAD, the artists have chosen to lean on an irreverent, convivial cliché lovingly lifted from pop lyrics as their inspiration. They have adopted this playfully bad attitude to temporarily free themselves from entrenched cultural and academic touchstones, to forego references to art world honorifics and standard–bearers, and to find a weak spot in the institutional walls and push through. Break Every Rule gives artists a moment to be willfully rebellious, to abandon formality; it is a small but unapologetic celebration of rioters, dissenters, and renegades everywhere.

In conjunction with this exhibition, MFA students will also present No Algorithm Night. During this event participating artists will screen their favorite videos from the far reaches of the internet. This includes music videos, short films, cultural critique, ASMR, foil polishing, playthroughs, how–tos, cats, lost movie trailers, and other YouTube esoterica. This event is free and open to the public.
