Minneapolis, MN—April 23, 2019—The Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) is proud to present Continuum: McKnight Visual Artists Fellows, 2014–2018. This group exhibition features thirty-one of the forty artists who have been awarded these prestigious McKnight Fellowships for Visual Artists between 2014 and 2018. The fellowship changed its programming structure in 2014 to focus on expanding the fellows’ network by inviting six national curators and art critics to the Twin Cities for individual studio visits. Out of these conservations, the McKnight Visual Artist Discussion Series was established, featuring two fellows paired with a curator in dialogue about their work and broader contemporary art ideas and concerns. This public presentation replaced the culminating group exhibition that was last hosted in MCAD’s main gallery in 2013. Continuum: McKnight Visual Artists Fellows, 2014–2018 provides five years of fellows a platform to share their work with viewers and celebrates the ambition and diversity of their artistic practices.

The exhibition opens in the MCAD Main and Concourse Galleries with an artist reception on Friday, June 14.

The McKnight Artist Fellowship Program is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the country. Established in 1981, the fellowship program provides annual, unrestricted cash awards to outstanding mid-career Minnesota artists in eleven areas, totaling nearly $1 million each year. For nearly four decades, MCAD has administered this fellowship program and provided support to nearly 200 artists. Non-profit arts organizations like MCAD oversee the administration of the fellowships and structure their own programs to respond to the unique opportunities and challenges of different creative disciplines.

The McKnight Foundation seeks to improve the quality of life for present and future generations through grant-making, coalition-building and the encouragement of strategic policy reform. Founded in 1953 and independently endowed by William and Maude McKnight, the Minnesota-based foundation had assets of approximately $2.3 billion and granted about $90 million in 2017.

Recognized nationally and internationally for its innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to visual arts education, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design is home to more than 750 students and offers professional certificates, bachelor of fine arts and bachelor of science degrees, and graduate degrees.
