Art Educators Workshop: Experimental Drawing and Mixed Media

This workshop is geared towards adventurous individuals eager to explore new creative terrain and the art educator who wants to expand the way they think about drawing. The class will consider the criteria for successful experimental work and will look at contemporary artists using experimental drawing as their primary artistic practice. Drawing will be considered as a mode of discovery and creativity. Experimentation will be key to exploring the parameters of drawing. Working from observation to the abstract, students will engage a range of processes using traditional tools and materials in non-traditional ways, as well as using unconventional materials as a means to examine the possibilities of mark-making, space, and surfaces. Spontaneity and improvisation will be emphasized as methods of exploration in the creation of mixed media drawings as well as ephemeral works; including collage, image transfer, artists’ books, monoprints, and more. Emphasis will be placed on examining the relationship between how drawings are made and what they potentially express.

Class time will be split between presentations, dialogue and studio time. / Materials fee of $10 in addition to tuition.

Art educators need to take their work with them on the last day of the workshop. Please consider bringing extra money if mailing work home will be necessary. Any work remaining after the workshop will be disposed of.
