Building Contemporary Furniture in Wood

Students in this self-driven class will explore the basics of contemporary furniture design and fabrication. Each student will be able to design and construct a piece of furniture using MCAD’s wood shop. Class discussions will focus on materials, tools, design, and techniques that will aid in the conceptualization and completion of a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture. The 3D shop will be open for students to work on their projects when other classes are not in session.  The shop is open for use during open shop hours when other classes are not in session: Monday - Friday 8 am - 12 pm, Monday - Thursday 6 pm - 9 pm, and Sunday 12 pm - 5 pm. Students should expect to spend additional money on materials based on the scope of their individual project. What to Bring: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook. Safety glasses; wood for project, tape measure, screwdriver with drill bits; sandpaper. A complete list of suggested materials will be discussed during the first class meeting.

What to Wear: Closed toe shoes, safety glasses, clothes appropriate for messy creativity.

If the minimum enrollment is not met by the deadline above, the class will be canceled on this date. Registration will remain open after this date if the minimum enrollment has been met.
