Characters are essential to making a successful story. Students in this class will observe and discuss ways in which artists and authors establish characters in visual media, including film, animation, comics, and games. The class will feature discussion of character development, writing and drawing exercises, and incorporate visual and informational research. Students will learn different methods of character design through style, materials and storytelling methods, create illustrations from sketch to finish and produce a character portfolio. Students will produce a final character portfolio, which will include a brief written narrative and illustrations. / Open to students ages 15–18. MCAD strictly adheres to these age guidelines and is unable to allow exceptions. / View complete policies here.

Prerequisite: Previous physical and digital drawing and painting experience helpful, but not required. Previous experience with Adobe Photoshop is also helpful, but not required.

What to bring: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook; USB drive or cloud storage option for saving work. A complete list of suggested materials will be discussed during the first class meeting.

What to wear: Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.

If the minimum enrollment is not met by the deadline above, the class will be canceled on this date. Registration will remain open after this date if the minimum enrollment has been met.
