Learn about the expansive and diverse world of comic book stories and narrative styles while learning the fundamental aspects of story building and comic book layout. Students will create original characters and storylines and be introduced to the techniques, materials, and disciplines used to create professional comic art and picture books. Students will also learn the following skills: storyboarding; lettering; and inking. / Open to students ages 12–15. This online course will be synchronous, meaning students will meet together online. Class meetings will be conducted via Google Meet and will include lecture, demonstrations, class discussions, small group discussions, exercises, work time, critiques, time to ask questions, and one-on-one meetings with the Instructor.

Prerequisites: Previous drawing experience helpful, but not required.

Required hardware: A computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access, a camera, and microphone for class meetings and to capture and upload work.

Required supplies for the first day: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook; eraser; metal ruler; Speedball Cartooning Pen Set; jar or plastic cup for water; 17” two round brushes, sizes #1 and #3; paints and other pencil/pen colours of choice. Supplies will cost approximately $30-40.

If the minimum enrollment is not met by the deadline above, the class will be canceled on this date. Registration will remain open after this date if the minimum enrollment has been met.
