Cut, Fold, and Stitch: The Art of Bookmaking (On Campus)

Students in this class enjoy learning how to hand bind their own journals and sketchbooks. Students will learn a variety of folded structures (accordion fold, petal fold, secret mystery page, and blizzard books) and more complex bindings, multi-section sewn books. By the end, each student will make a half dozen or more book structures, both traditional and sculptural. / No previous experience required. / Open to students ages 12–15. Required supplies for the first day: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook; cutting board/mat; ruler; xacto knife; pencils; colored pencils; tape; scissors; bone folder or other tool for folding paper; awl (pointy tool for poking holes in paper); waxed linen thread, or other heavy sewing thread such as coat thread; sewing needles (tapestry needles with large eyes, 4 of them); decorative paper for covers; paper for text pages (ie drawing paper or other); pieces of corrugated cardboard box (10" x13" with flutes in the long direction, 2 pieces at 3x6"); glue or glue stick. Specific supplies will be sent to students 2 weeks before the class begins. Supplies will cost approximately $20-30.

What to wear: Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.
