Digital Pattern and Surface Design (Online)

The design industry of today is based on computer-aided design - pattern design is no exception. In this class students learn how to create beautiful and balanced patterns and textures using the latest techniques from Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. The goal will be to combine the different elements and looks to achieve rich and nuanced designs. The class includes technical exercises and tasks, forays into the history of pattern and textile design in different contexts, online museum collections and other relevant professional websites visits. This class is for people with existing knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite who wish to enrich their design toolbox. / Each student will have access to Adobe Creative Cloud software throughout the class. / Open to students ages 18 and above. This online class will be synchronous, meaning students will meet together online. Class meetings will be conducted via Google Meet and include lecture, demonstrations, class discussions, exercises, work time, critiques, and time to ask questions and share resources.

Prerequisites: Previous drawing and painting experience helpful, but not required. Basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator are required, such as understanding the interface, basic file and edit menus, file resolution and file mode, layers principles and selection and drawing tools. 

Required software: Adobe Creative Cloud (provided by MCAD).

Required hardware: Computer capable of running Adobe Creative Cloud with internet access, a camera, and microphone for class meetings.

Recommended supplies for the first class: Digital camera, examples include point-and-shoot, Digital SLR or smartphone camera. The Instructor will provide images to work with if students do not have access to a digital camera.

Register Before: June 4
If the minimum enrollment is not met by the deadline above, the class will be canceled on this date. Registration will remain open after this date if the minimum enrollment has been met.

Class Savings
Register on or before May 10 and save $25.
Register for more than one class at a time and receive $25 off each additional class (same-day registrations only).
