The Experience of Art: Response and Reflection

Art evokes emotions. This course builds from the gut reaction derived from an encounter with a work of art to elaborate on a more pure and direct appreciation of it. Aesthetic qualities and non-artistic connections about a work of art are gathered by the students during a museum visit the first day of class. Over the next sessions, students will discuss, challenge, and refine their response concerning direct pleasure [aesthetic and non-artistic], intellectual challenge, and imaginative experiences evoked by the works. Students will gain a renewed sense of the nature of aesthetic experience and of the nature of art capable of reinvigorating their practice. / Open to students ages 18 and above. / View complete policies.
