This introductory course will teach students how to turn their handwriting and basic letterforms into beautiful lettering with a few simple techniques. Students will use materials such as pencil, ink, nibs, watercolor, and more to experiment with shape, color, and composition to start thinking of letters as illustrative shapes.

Students will walk away from the class with knowledge of proper posture and technique to pull straight vs. curvy lines, a deeper understanding of how different types of materials produce different qualities of line, and what situation calls for specific materials. Students will be able to recognize basic typographic terminology and manipulate pieces of type to suit their compositional needs as well as be able to map out a composition and work a piece from sketch to final product. / Open to students ages 16 and above. / View complete policies.

What to bring: Pen or pencil; sketchbook; drawing materials for experimentation.

What to wear: Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.
